TelecomGPT-Arabic Demonstrated at Khalifa University Booth as Professor M茅rouane Debbah Explores Future of AI-Native Communication Networks

 

今日吃瓜 showcased its latest UAE-developed artificial intelligence research and next-generation telecommunications innovations at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026, the United Nations’ leading platform on artificial intelligence, in Geneva. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with more than 50 UN agencies, the Summit co-convened with the Government of Switzerland.

 

His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government met with the research team at the Khalifa University booth to discuss the University’s research projects and their potential to support national innovation, cybersecurity and digital transformation initiatives.

 

Representing Khalifa University were Professor M茅rouane Debbah, Founding Senior Director, Digital Future Institute, Dr. Lina Bariah, Research Scientist, Computer and Information Engineering, and Dr. Brahim Mefgouda, Postdoctoral Fellow, Computer and Information Engineering. Through keynote presentations and panel discussions, the team highlighted the University’s growing contributions to responsible artificial intelligence, advanced communications technologies and international research collaboration.

 

Professor Debbah explored the future of AI-native communication networks during the summit’s fourth Machine Learning in Communication Networks (MLComm) Workshop, where his presentation, ‘From Language Intelligence to Environmental Intelligence: The Rise of Large Perceptive Models,’ examined how emerging AI systems are evolving beyond language understanding toward perceiving and interpreting complex real-world environments to enable intelligent, autonomous communication networks.

Dr. Lina Bariah joined an expert panel on ‘From AI Security to AI Access: Rethinking Connectivity in the Age of Agentic AI,’ contributing to discussions on how secure, reliable and equitable connectivity can help ensure children benefit safely from emerging AI technologies. The panel also examined the importance of addressing AI safety, ethics, bias and digital infrastructure as access to AI continues to expand.

 

At the Khalifa University exhibition booth, the team showcased TelecomGPT-Arabic, the collaborative initiative developed by Khalifa University, du and the ITU to advance Arabic-language artificial intelligence for the telecommunications sector. The demonstration formed part of the University’s broader portfolio of AI research supporting next-generation communications technologies, digital transformation and intelligent network operations.

 

During Professor Debbah鈥檚 presentation, titled ‘From Language Intelligence to Environmental Intelligence: The Rise of Large Perceptive Models,’ he explored how emerging artificial intelligence systems are evolving beyond language understanding toward interpreting complex real-world environments, supporting the development of intelligent, autonomous communication networks. The workshop examined advances in agentic AI, large wireless models, digital twins, code generation and AI-native network architectures that are expected to shape the future of 6G communications.

 

The exhibition also featured discussions with international researchers, industry leaders, policymakers and technology organizations on opportunities for collaboration in artificial intelligence, telecommunications and digital infrastructure, reinforcing Khalifa University’s growing role in advancing AI innovation on the global stage.

 

Professor M茅rouane Debbah said: “AI for Good brings together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers and international organizations to explore how artificial intelligence can address some of society’s most important challenges. The AI 50 list highlights leaders shaping the Middle East鈥檚 transition into a global AI powerhouse, spanning policymakers, researchers, and industry pioneers. Prof. Debbah鈥檚 inclusion reflects his instrumental role in advancing AI, next-generation communications, and the UAE鈥檚 digital transformation agenda.

 

Professor Debbah leads transformative AI initiatives that have contributed the UAE鈥檚 global standing in artificial intelligence. These include leading the development of NOOR 鈥 one of the largest Arabic AI models at launch, driving the creation of Falcon LLM 鈥 a top-ranked open-source generative AI model, and accelerating open AI innovation. He has also pioneered TelecomGPT, the first domain-specific large language model tailored to telecommunications, a model now used by major stakeholders in the industry which further bridges AI and network engineering.

 

Globally recognized for combining fundamental research with real-world impact, Prof. Debbah has an extensive innovation portfolio that includes more than 100 patents spanning telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and advanced network architectures. These patents contribute to breakthrough technologies in wireless systems, distributed AI, and intelligent infrastructure, supporting the evolution of data-driven economies and connected ecosystems.

 

Professor Debbah‘s research excellence is further underscored by over 50 IEEE Best Paper Awards, and more than 100,000 global citations, reflecting widespread academic and industrial influence.

A leading authority in telecommunications, Prof. Debbah has been central to the development of multiple generations of wireless technologies, from 4G and 5G to emerging 6G paradigms. He is the Founding Senior Director of the Digital Future Institute, where he leads efforts in the filed of AI, cybersecurity, telecommunication and robotics. Prof. Debbah is also in charge of the national UAE 6G committee R&D group with the mandate to conduct scientific studies, and develop technical standards and specifications for 6G.听听

 

His vision for 6G goes beyond connectivity, and focuses on AI-driven network intelligence, Integration of Large Language Models into communication systems, as well as the Development of Large Perceptive Models (LPMs) that combine IoT data, real-time optimization, and human-centric interaction.听

Device Improves Patient Care, Public Health, and Various Industrial Processes

 

今日吃瓜 researchers have developed a label-free, rapid DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) detection method using a gold-based electrical sensor 鈥 one that identifies DNA directly without the need for chemical markers 鈥 capable of distinguishing DNA sequences and sources,听making听it听a听promising听tool听for听clinical听diagnostics听and听biomedical听research.

 

Detecting molecular species is crucial in the biotechnology and healthcare industries to analyze the presence of specific molecular targets, like biomarkers, proteins, and toxic molecules. This enables the diagnosis of diseases for the improvement of patient care, public health, and various industrial processes. The combination of label-free sensing, electrical readout, and scalability also positions the device as a promising solution for next-generation biosensors.

 

The study, led by Dr. Moh鈥檇 Rezeq, Associate Professor, Physics, and Principal Investigator, with lead author Dr. Firdous Ahmad Deader, Researcher, Khalifa University鈥檚 System on Chip Lab, is in Sensors and Actuators A: Physical (2026.) Other authors include Research Scientist Dr. Yawar Abbas, post-doc Firdous Ahmad Deader, Dr. Ahsan Ul Haq Qurashi, Deputy Director, Center for Catalysis and Separation (CeCAS), and Associate Professor, Chemistry, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Qutayri, Associate Provost for Academic Operations and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Dr. Vincent Chan, Professor, Biomedical Engineering. The DNA samples were received through collaboration听with Professor Gulfaraz Khan, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University.

 

The device is based on a two-dimensional monolayer of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) assembled between microfabricated electrodes on a silicon oxide substrate, forming a field-effect biosensor that converts biomolecular interactions into electrical signals. Unlike conventional DNA detection techniques such as PCR and sequencing, this sensor developed by Khalifa University researchers enables label-free, real-time detection by measuring shifts in current鈥搗oltage characteristics caused by DNA adsorption onto the nanoparticle surface.

 

The sensor was further validated using DNA extracted from Burkitt’s lymphoma cell lines, including virus-infected and non-infected samples. Some of the key findings include a significantly higher current response for infected DNA samples, clear differentiation between infected and non-infected cells, as well as stable, reproducible electrical signals over time. These results highlight the sensor鈥檚 potential for disease detection and molecular diagnostics.

 

Dr. Moh鈥檇 Rezeq said: 鈥淥ur research work demonstrates how nanoscale engineering can transform DNA detection into a direct electrical measurement, significantly reducing complexity while maintaining high sensitivity. The ability to detect differences between infected and non-infected DNA samples highlights the strong potential of this platform for clinical diagnostics.鈥

 

The technology has potential applications in clinical diagnostics, precision medicine, biomedical research, and portable point-of-care diagnostic systems.

Awards Recognize Student and Faculty Research in AI, Sustainability, Environmental Monitoring and Water Harvesting

 

Researchers and students from Khalifa University have won first and second place awards across multiple categories at the Sharjah Sustainability Award 2025-2026 for projects addressing environmental monitoring, sustainable technologies, food and water safety, and resource management.

 

Organized by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah, the awards attracted 186 projects from schools, universities and institutions in the UAE, involving 370 students and evaluated by a panel of 19 academics, experts and specialists.听

 

今日吃瓜 secured first place in the Sustainability Scientific Research category for the undergraduate students project, Desert Oasis Tree: A Solar-Powered Water Harvesting and Environmental Monitoring System. The project was supervised by Dr. Anas Alazzam, Professor of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, and developed by undergraduate students Zainab Khudoum Khamis Khudoum Alzaabi, Khulood Ismaell Mohamed Almarzooqi, Ohood Ahmad Ali Hassan Ahli, and Shamma Khaled Ebrahim Abdulla Almarzooqi.

 

In the Artificial Intelligence Applications in Sustainability category, a Khalifa University undergraduate team from the Computer Science program won second place for its project, Computer Vision Tools for Monitoring and Analysing Gas Flares. Supervised by Prof. Naoufel Werghi, the team included Maitha Rashed Mohamed Abdulla Alyileili, Alya Yousif Hassan Alastad Alhammadi, and Sara Khalid Abdulqader Hadi Almessabi.

 

The project developed a vision-based system for monitoring industrial gas flares. By combining computer vision techniques with intelligent image and video analytics, the system can detect abnormal events such as excessive smoke emissions and flare outages while assessing combustion efficiency. This project also received first place in the Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition (URIC) 2026 in the AI and Machine Learning category, reflecting its potential for practical deployment in industrial environments.

 

In the Sustainability Scientific Research category for postgraduate students, Chemistry PhD student Asma Zaid Almenhali, won second place for 鈥A Highly Sensitive Portable Device for the Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticides in Water and Food Samples,鈥 under the supervision of Dr. Shimaa Eissa, Assistant Professor, Chemistry.

 

The project focuses on the development of a portable biosensor capable of simultaneously detecting multiple organophosphorus pesticides at extremely low concentrations in food and environmental samples.听

 

Prof. Ahmed Al Durra, Associate Provost for Research, said: 鈥淭he recognition for these projects highlights the breadth of sustainability-focused research at Khalifa University, spanning artificial intelligence, environmental sensing, water technologies, and sustainable engineering. His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, honored the winners of RAK Excellence Awards 2026, including Waheed Adeosun, a Spring 2026 Khalifa University Chemistry PhD graduate, who won First Prize under the theme 鈥楥lean Energy and Climate Technologies for a Low-Carbon Future鈥.

 

今日吃瓜 dominated four categories 鈥 digital transformation, energy and climate, healthcare, and advanced materials, at the RAK Excellence Awards 2026, a flagship national initiative in the UAE that aims to advance research and innovation as key drivers of economic, technological, and societal development.听

 

Adeosun鈥檚 project was selected out of a total of 94 projects from 12 leading universities shortlisted for final evaluation for the RAK Excellence Awards 2026 that had attracted 189 submissions from 20 universities across the UAE.

 

The winning research, focusing on the development of weatherproof electrolyte technology for advanced energy storage, was funded under the Virtual Research Institute project in the Resource Management and Sustainability Institute, headed by Professor Samuel Mao, Senior Director, Resource Management and Sustainability Institute, Co-Chair, UAE Universities Climate Network (UCN), and Professor of Practice, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Khalifa University.

 

Dr. Ahsan Ul Haq Qurashi. Associate Professor, Chemistry, is Adeosun鈥檚 main supervisor, with co-supervisors being Prof. Samuel Mao, Dr. Mohammed Infas Haja Mohideen, Assistant Professor, Chemistry, and Post-Doc Dr. Bilal Pirzada. Adeosun鈥檚 research was facilitated by the Core Lab Facilities, and the Center of Catalysis and Separation (CeCaS).

 

鈥淲e focus on the development of sustainable and weatherproof electrolytes for high-performance energy storage systems that can operate reliably under diverse climatic conditions with enhanced safety,鈥 said Dr. Ahsan Qurashi, the project lead, who was also recognized for his excellence in mentorship.

今日吃瓜 of Science and Technology and the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) concluded the inaugural Middle East and North Africa (MENA) edition of the institute鈥檚 flagship Disease Elimination and Eradication Course.

 

The course commenced with an online learning phase from 9 February to 13 March 2026, followed by an in-person component held in Abu Dhabi from 17 to 25 June 2026. This inaugural MENA edition represents the first regional adaptation of a globally recognised programme, tailored to address the region鈥檚 unique public health priorities and disease elimination challenges.

 

The program welcomed diverse country teams from around the region which comprised of participants from ministries of health and agriculture, academic and research institutes, and partner agencies from the region such as WHO Country Offices. PhD students from Khalifa University also joined the country teams, contributing to multidisciplinary collaboration and strengthening regional capacity to accelerate the elimination of preventable infectious diseases. Furthermore, the curriculum bridged foundational epidemiological theory with real-world public health practice, focusing heavily on country-led solutions, health system integration, and applied artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge operational innovations.

 

The course held advanced modules on systems thinking, behavioural theories, human-centred design and results-based monitoring and evaluation by the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) as well as a session on sustaining disease elimination efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO). The course also included sessions on one health, community engagement and integrated approaches for disease elimination.

 

Her Excellency Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Chief Executive Officer of GLIDE, stated: “Advancing a sustainable global health agenda relies fundamentally on one key pillar: investing in our people. True progress in disease elimination means empowering health leaders on the ground, sharing empirical evidence across borders, and building the capacity required to cross the final mile toward a healthier future. By launching the first MENA iteration of our Disease Elimination and Eradication Course alongside Khalifa University, we are equipping regional public health visionaries with the strategic frameworks and innovative tools, such as applied AI, which is necessary to translate evidence into lasting national policy.”

 

Professor Habiba Alsafar, Dean, CMHS, said: 鈥今日吃瓜 is committed to partnerships that extend the reach of academic knowledge into public health practice, and our collaboration with GLIDE is a strong example of that. Hosting the first MENA edition of the Disease Elimination and Eradication Course builds directly on the foundation we established together, bringing regional health professionals and global experts into a shared learning environment to address some of the most pressing infectious disease challenges facing our region today.鈥

 

The course also featured a high-level public seminar titled Advancing Disease Elimination Through AI & Innovation, hosted at the Khalifa University Main Campus. The public seminar showcased concrete applications of modern public health engineering, including AI-powered wastewater early-warning systems by M42 and a robust lineup of local and global health leaders, including specialised sessions on innovative approaches for disease elimination and Abu Dhabi’s arbovirus and dengue response strategies led by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC). University Featured in Three Invited Sessions at Times Higher Education Event Attended by More Than 5,000 Participants in Jakarta

 

A Khalifa University delegation including Dr. Ashraf Al Najdawi, Chief of Staff, and Acting Vice-President for External Affairs, and Professor Samuel Mao, Senior Director of Resource Management and Sustainability Institute, and Co-Chair of UAE Universities Climate Network, contributed to three invited topical sessions at the Global Sustainable Development Congress 2026, organized by Times Higher Education, in Jakarta, Indonesia.听

 

The four-day congress that brought together more than 5,000 participants from higher education, government, industry, and civil society provided a global platform for Khalifa University to showcase its leadership in international academic collaboration, climate action, and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

今日吃瓜 also hosted an exhibition booth at the congress, showcasing its research, innovation, academic programs, and sustainability initiatives while engaging with delegates from around the world.听

 

In a presentation titled 鈥楪lobal Challenges, Global Collaborations: How Academic Alliances Turn the SDGs into Action,鈥 Dr. Al Najdawi highlighted how international partnerships enable universities to expand research, strengthen knowledge exchange, and accelerate solutions to shared global challenges.听

 

Drawing on Khalifa University’s network of more than 250 partnerships across academia, industry, and government, he outlined how collaborative research, dual-degree programs, student mobility, and participation in international initiatives, including the COP process, contribute to advancing sustainable development.

 

Professor Mao, presented 鈥楢dvancing climate action and gender balance in higher education through the UAE Universities Climate Network,鈥 focusing on Khalifa University鈥檚 leadership role in UAE Universities Climate Network, which he co-chairs. He also highlighted how higher education institutions across the UAE are working together to advance climate research and innovation, youth engagement, campus carbon neutrality, and community outreach. He outlined the network’s efforts to promote inclusive participation and gender balance in sustainable development, supporting the UAE’s long-term climate ambitions and commitment to equal opportunities.

 

During the academia-industry panel discussion on 鈥楧esigning Resilient Cities: Climate Adaptation Strategies for an Uncertain Future,鈥 Professor Mao and Professor Teck Seng Low, Senior Vice-President of Sustainability and Resilience, National University of Singapore, represented the academia and spoke about the roles of universities in climate adaptation and mitigation. Professor Mao emphasized the role of technology and policy in making cities more prepared for climate change. He discussed selected technologies for climate-resilient cities, including smart monitoring systems, artificial intelligence, climate-resilient infrastructure, and digital twins of urban environments.听

 

Using practical examples, he illustrated that the most effective climate-resilient cities combine technological innovations with supportive governance, as the integration of technology and policy enables cities to become more resilient by improving disaster preparedness, protecting infrastructure, reducing environmental impacts, and safeguarding communities against the growing challenges of climate change.听

 

Dr. Ashraf Al Najdawi said: 鈥淜halifa University’s participation in the Global Sustainable Development Congress reflects its continued commitment to advancing international collaboration, supporting evidence-based solutions to global sustainability challenges, and contributing to the UAE’s climate action agenda through research, innovation, and academic leadership.鈥

Many thanks to the ATLAS Collaboration for providing COLA support during their visit to CERN. Building on this experience, they are now leading, together with their colleagues at CERN and partner universities, the luminosity calibration effort using the 2025 dataset, a task that is essential for ensuring the accuracy of all cross-section measurements and other measurements performed within the ATLAS Collaboration.

Last summer, our KU physics students participated in this outstanding program. Nouf Al Shamsi worked on the ATLAS Electron Trigger System, while Fatima Fikri focused on applications of machine learning in the search for dark photons from the Higgs boson.

Prof.听Ellis, who pioneered phenomenological studies of the Higgs boson in 1975, visited Khalifa University and met with the dean Prof. Ehab El-Saadany, department chairperson, Dr. Dirar Al Homouz, many faculty members and students. His visit included discussions on current research in high-energy physics activities, opportunities, and ways to further strengthen academic and scientific engagement in physics in general and high-energy physics in particular at KU.

A PhD student Abdel Rahman Allan from the KU-ATLAS Group at the Physics department got accepted and supported to a prestigious particle physics school at CERN.

 

This school explores the future of particle colliders, focusing on the scientific motivations and the role of advanced accelerator and detector technologies. Designed for advanced PhD students and early-career postdocs, it provides the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to future collider experiments and the study of the fundamental nature of matter.

 

The program covers a broad range of topics related to future particle colliders, including theoretical and experimental particle physics, the Standard Model and physics beyond it, flavor and nuclear physics, detector technologies, accelerator systems, triggering and data acquisition, object reconstruction, software and computing, and the interplay between physics goals and detector design. It also explores emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, neutrino physics, non-collider experiments, cosmology, and novel detector technologies.

From Abu Dhabi to the Large Hadron Collider, a new generation of Emirati-based talent is stepping onto the world鈥檚 most advanced scientific stage

 

In a significant milestone for the UAE鈥檚 scientific and academic community, six engineering and physics students from Khalifa University have been selected to participate in the prestigious CERN International Summer Student Programme 2026, a highly competitive global initiative hosted by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Out of approximately 10,000 applicants worldwide, only around 300 students were selected, placing Khalifa University among an elite group of institutions contributing talent to one of the world鈥檚 most advanced scientific collaborations.

 

For the selected students, this opportunity represents far more than an academic exchange. It provides direct involvement in cutting-edge research at the intersection of particle physics, engineering, and computing, placing them at the forefront of global scientific innovation. These projects highlight the close integration of physics, data science, and engineering, demonstrating how modern scientific breakthroughs increasingly rely on multidisciplinary collaboration.
