]]> Disposal of food and chemical processes wastes, which contains large amounts of nutrients, is currently a significant problem. Their reuse as microalgae medium for production of high value carotenoids is proposed. This approach will decrease the harmful effects of wastes to the environment and contribute to the diversification policy of the UAE government. In the project, a new medium will be formulated from FWE and diluted reject brine (DRB) discharged from a desalination plant. This new medium will be used to cultivate Dunaliella salina microalgae. The production of carotenoids such as β-carotene, astaxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin from the cultivation D. salina will be studied. This is the first proposed study on the potential of FWE medium for the cultivation of D. salina toward carotenoid production. The economics, environmental credit ensured by FWE and DRB reuse, and sustainability of the future relevance of the proposed production chain will be investigated.
