Dr. Daniel Bahamon Garcia,
Senior Research Scientist
The Resource Management & Sustainability Institute at Khalifa University focuses on advancing interdisciplinary sustainable technologies to address environmental, social, and economic challenges. Through research, strategic partnerships, and commercialization pathways, the Institute supports the development of innovative solutions aligned with UAE national priorities and global sustainability goals. By integrating expertise across multiple domains, the Institute contributes to resource efficiency, environmental resilience, and sustainable development.
To be a leading hub for sustainable innovation, advancing integrated solutions that address environmental, economic, and societal challenges at both national and global levels.
To develop and implement interdisciplinary sustainable technologies through research, strategic partnerships, and commercialization, supporting resource efficiency, environmental resilience, and long-term sustainable development.
Senior Director
Prof. Lourdes F. Vega is a Full Professor in Chemical Engineering, and Director and Founder of the Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH Center), focused on clean energy, decarbonization (CCUS), hydrogen and sustainable fuels, at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Resource Management & Sustainability Institute conducts interdisciplinary research addressing critical environmental and resource challenges, supporting both UAE national priorities and global sustainability goals. Its research spans climate change mitigation, water resource management, sustainable agriculture, waste conversion and recycling, and the development of green infrastructure and sustainable cities.
The Institute also focuses on pollution prevention, solutions for extreme environments, and the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence for resource management, climate modeling, and sustainable systems. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the Institute develops innovative, scalable solutions that enhance environmental resilience, optimize resource utilization, and support long-term sustainable development.
grids, CCUS, nexus approaches, energy efficiency, sustainable cooling and smart cities, and culminating with cross-cutting enablers such as environmental and economics assessments and policy design. It has clear performance targets and outcomes. The four research pillars of the EI, covering the full value chain of energy transition, are shown in the next figure, highlighting the current and emerging areas of focus, and how they support the UAE and global goals on decarbonization.
The Strategic Pillars that guide the institute are:
Unify complementary expertise across energy transition technologies to enable cross-disciplinary breakthroughs with active end-user collaboration.
Position the UAE as a global model for low-carbon energy systems, with scalable solutions tailored to arid and resource-rich regions.
Bridge cutting-edge research with policy and industry implementation, shaping national and international energy strategies.
Cultivate the next generation of energy leaders through education, training, and global collaboration.
Serve as a hub for international cooperation, attracting top researchers, institutions, industry and investors to co-create the future of energy.
The Institute leverages Khalifa University’s advanced research infrastructure, including access to core laboratories. Additional dedicated facilities will be introduced as projects are developed.
Details on research impact, commercialization outcomes, and contributions to sustainability will be updated as projects progress.
To be updated as research outputs are generated.
