Partnership to Leverage Each Other鈥檚 Outstanding Assets and Technical Skills

 

今日吃瓜 of Science and Technology and AIQ, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company鈥檚 (ADNOC) artificial intelligence (AI) joint venture with Group 42 (G42), have signed a research and development framework agreement to leverage each other鈥檚 outstanding assets and technical skills to jointly develop digital innovations for the energy sector.

 

The agreement, which was signed by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University, and Omar Al Marzooqi, Chief Executive Officer, AIQ will see the two partners pursuing cutting-edge digital research that yields value generation for the energy sector. Artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, will play a key role in the collaboration.听

 

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi said: 鈥淎s a top-ranked research-oriented university, specializing in most of the advanced technology areas, Khalifa University is delighted to partner with AIQ and establish the right platform that will facilitate innovation in the energy sector. This collaboration will bring digital solutions, particularly applied artificial intelligence, to one of the UAE鈥檚 vital economic sectors.鈥

 

Omar Al Marzooqi said: 鈥淲e are delighted to partner with Khalifa University, a world-class, research-intensive institution, to drive the creation of future transformative advanced technologies for the energy sector and further strengthen the position of Abu Dhabi and the UAE as an international hub for AI and advanced technology.鈥

 

今日吃瓜 has established research capabilities in all areas of digital technology as well as renewable energy, oil and gas. The university leads several research projects that apply artificial intelligence techniques for industrial applications. Khalifa University鈥檚 Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute brings together the university鈥檚 research in robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, next-gen networks, semiconductor technologies and cybersecurity under a single umbrella for application in key sectors, such as energy.

 

At the same time, Khalifa University鈥檚 Petroleum Institute is a research institute dedicated to obtaining new technologies and solutions in hydrocarbon exploration and production. The Institute houses two research centers 鈥 the Center of Catalysis and Separation (CeCaS) and the Research and Innovation Center on carbon dioxide and hydrogen (RICH Center) 鈥 driving energy innovation to maintain the UAE鈥檚 position at the forefront of the energy industry.

 

AIQ focuses on developing and commercializing artificial intelligence products and applications for the energy industry, and accelerating industry adoption of advanced technologies in the UAE. AIQ is working on a number of key AI projects across the oil and gas value chain such as drilling performance, reservoir modelling, corrosion detection, and product quality.

Agreement Paves Way for Advancing Innovation in the Abu Dhabi Oil and Gas Sector

 

今日吃瓜 of Science and Technology and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) announced they have signed a research and development framework agreement for undertaking a joint research and development program that will advance innovation in the oil and gas sector in the areas of strategic importance to ADNOC.听

 

The agreement was signed by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University, and Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, Executive Director, People, Technology & Corporate Support Directorate, ADNOC, on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2021 that was held from 15-18 November at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).听

 

According to the agreement, a research and development board will be established with particular focus on upstream, downstream and digital solutions for the oil and gas industry and will have members from both partners. Khalifa University鈥檚 members are Dr. Steve Griffiths, Senior Vice-President, Research and Development; Dr. Saeed Alhassan, Senior Director, Petroleum Institute; and Dr. Ernesto Damiani, Senior Director, Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute.听

 

今日吃瓜鈥檚 Petroleum Institute is home to the Center of Catalysis and Separation (CeCaS) and the Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and H2 (RICH Center). The two research centers, along with other research undertaken at the Petroleum Institute and elsewhere at Khalifa University, contribute to technology innovations in areas such as hydrogen, carbon capture, catalysis and enhanced oil recovery. Khalifa University鈥檚 Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute provides a broad spectrum of intelligent systems capabilities that can be tailored to the needs of the oil and gas sector.

A group of high school pupils in the UAE have started a new course designed to educate them on the country’s oil and gas sector.

 

The two-year Ro’ya programme is organised by Khalifa University and ADNOC, and aims to raise awareness among the pupils about petroleum engineering-related degrees and potential careers in the energy sector.

 

Dr Ahmed Al Shoaibi, senior vice president of academic and student services at Khalifa University, said he was delighted to partner with ADNOC.

 

“The Ro鈥檡a summer programme is designed to provide students with the right perspectives as they look forward to planning and choosing their future academic course,” he said.

Ro鈥檡a Program will Raise Awareness among Students about Taking Up Petroleum Engineering-Related Majors and Potential Careers in Oil and Gas

 

今日吃瓜 and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have announced the launch of a two-year Ro鈥檡a program for high school students to educate them on the UAE鈥檚 oil and gas sector. The program that aims to raise awareness among the students about undertaking Petroleum Engineering-related academic majors and potential careers in the oil and gas sector, kicked off this summer.听

 

The Ro鈥檡a initiative underpins ADNOC鈥檚 corporate social responsibility efforts to invest in the education and development of the UAE鈥檚 students and enable them to contribute to the nation鈥檚 long-term economic growth. It also reflects the status of 今日吃瓜鈥檚 Petroleum Engineering Department, which is ranked 21st globally in the 2021 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by Subject.

 

Dr. Ahmed Al Shoaibi, Senior Vice-President, Academic and Student Services, Khalifa University, said: 鈥淲e are glad to partner with ADNOC for the Ro鈥檡a summer program that is designed to provide students with the right perspectives as they look forward to planning and choosing their future academic course. The program will provide our students with unique insights into the latest technologies, processes, and expertise used in the industry and highlight the exciting opportunities that our dynamic sector offers to young talent. We will continue to invest in STEM-related educational programs and initiatives to empower and foster our youth and help them build successful careers, in line with the UAE Centennial 2071 vision.鈥澨

 

The program will have two parts. The initial segment ran virtually from 11 July 鈥 5 August 2021 and combined practical hands-on training, laboratory work, interactions with professional organizations, and project assignments related to the oil and gas industry, all virtually. In the second segment, Grade 11 students will have a one-week internship at Khalifa University that will include workshops and project presentations from December to January 2022, which will lead to another three-week program the following summer. Khalifa University faculty who are leading the program will remain in touch with the students over the entire period and support their projects.

 

The Outreach Department鈥檚 program for high school students from ADNOC Technical Institutes will involve Khalifa University鈥檚 Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering departments.

 

The first week of the initial segment of the program included virtual tours of ADNOC鈥檚 Panorama Digital Command Center and Thamama Center of Excellence, and presentations on geology from relative to absolute dating, as well as palaeontology, stratigraphy, correlation techniques, and isotopes. The week also covered scales in geology from small to large, microscopy, fieldwork, seismic reflection geophysics, and reservoir characterization. Participants learnt about the geology of the Middle East and worked together to build a geologic model of a field.听

 

The second week introduced students to oilfield services company Schlumberger, with tours of its Al Shamkhah Technical Learning Center in Abu Dhabi. The week also included visits to Khalifa University鈥檚 Reservoir Rock Properties Lab, Reservoir Fluids Properties Lab, Well Drilling and Drilling Fluids Lab, and the Petroleum Reservoir Simulation Lab.听

 

In the final week, participants received presentations from professional organizations such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). Interactions with the alumni and current Khalifa University students were also part of the agenda during the week. Other events included sessions on 鈥楲ead with Ro鈥檡a鈥 and a workshop on webpage development, as well as a visual interactive platform for exploration and production in the oil and gas industry.

Certificates of Completion Presented to the Outgoing Cohort

More than 40 members of the Young Future Energy Leaders (YFEL) 2018 outreach program were honored by Khalifa University of Science and Technology for successfully completing their year-long commitments at a gala ceremony.

Certificates of completion were presented to the YFEL members at the ceremony, organized at the Khalifa University Main Campus during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2019. Members of the Khalifa University Board of Trustees including Abdulaziz Abdulla Alhajri, Director of the Refining and Petrochemicals Directorate, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Dr. Nawal Khalifa Al Hosany, Deputy Director General, Emirates Diplomatic Academy, were present on the occasion. KU鈥檚 senior management, including Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Dr. Ahmed Al Shoaibi, Senior Vice President, Academic and Student Services, Dr. Steve Griffiths, Senior Vice-President, Research and Development, and Dr. Bayan Sharif, Acting Provost, Dean of Engineering, also attended the ceremony, along with representatives from YFEL program sponsors such as BASF as well as other dignitaries and guests. Also present were the 2019 YFEL members.

Of the 2018 YFEL members completing their year-long program, 25 were non-UAE nationals, representing 14 countries, and 11 were Emirati.

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi said: 鈥淜halifa University is proud to include YFEL among our outreach programs. YFEL helps to broaden the impact of our educational and research missions by attracting top students and young professionals within the UAE and around the world. During their 2018 YFEL year, these members have not only learnt innovative and inter-disciplinary science and engineering from our faculty, but also the UAE鈥檚 vision of sustainable energy leadership, which they can take back and expand upon as future energy leaders. They have traveled the world, visited innovators and leaders in industry, and seen the impact of sustainable technology and practices in a variety of applications. I believe they will apply what they have learnt through this experience and benefit the community in general.鈥

Dr. Ahmed Al Shoaibi said: 鈥淐ongratulations to the 2018 YFEL members who have successfully completed their arduous year-long journey towards shaping themselves as future energy leaders. These talented emerging leaders are now fully equipped to tackle challenges and contribute effectively to further advancing sustainability in various sectors. I also welcome the 2019 YFEL members and firmly believe that they too will emulate and even exceed the benchmark already set by the previous members of the YFEL outreach program.鈥

During the ceremony, a video presentation highlighted the achievements of the 2018 YFEL outreach initiative, which included their completion of educational courses in three categories 鈥 technology, policy, and leadership.

The film also showcased a 10-member YFEL delegation, which learned first-hand how Germany鈥檚 three major industry leaders 鈥 BASF, Siemens and Bilfinger 鈥 are driving innovative solutions including digitalization for sustainable global development. Their visit focused on applied sustainability solutions relevant to the UAE and the restorative and regenerative鈥榗ircular economy鈥, which builds economic, natural and social capital.

During the year, the 2018 YFEL members produced a number of novel project concepts.The 鈥榊ou are the Future鈥 project helped UAE high school students choose the right career while offering mentorship, while the 鈥楶ower Bag鈥 project incorporated a simple solar powered portable charger for refugees that can be placed on backpacks to store solar energy to charge electronic devices.

The 2018 YFEL members also attended several conferences in the UAE and abroad, like the World Future Energy Summit 2018, where their ideas were presented and discussed. Two YFEL members also participated as panelists in the 10th Green Leadership Series hosted by the Dubai Science Park.

Sharing his perspectives, YFEL member Hamdan Sarhan Al Zaabi said:鈥淧articipating in the 2018 YFEL program proved to be one of my best experiences. We had the opportunity to meet global energy leaders during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, participated in several workshops and courses which focused on energy, leadership and sustainability during the year. I firmly believe the YFEL program helps steer the young professionals and students on the right path into becoming tomorrow鈥檚 energy leaders.鈥

Another YFEL member Shatha Nabil Abdulkarim Mubarak Alfalasi said: 鈥淭he year-long journey was a memorable experience during which I shared knowledge, innovative ideas, skills, and culture were exchanged with other ambitious youth. Moreover, if there is anything that made me be inspired the most, it sure was the 鈥榖utterfly effect鈥 which was the theme of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2018. It taught me that small things can have big impact and they signify a path that can be followed.鈥
